Hawaii Geology Tour
This exclusive small group tour to Hawaii offers a unique opportunity to experience the birth of a new island and to examine the processes by which plants and animals colonise this hostile environment.
Staying at 1200 metres above sea level at the charming old world Kilauea Lodge, close to World Heritage Volcano National Park, we'll see molten lava pouring into the ocean, different types of lava and features such as craters, cones, rift zones, colonizing plants and climax rainforest.
Offering a fantastic opportunity for a first hand experience to learn about volcanism, the tour includes moderate walks into craters and across lava flows, all with detailed explanations by geologist Dr Robert Coenraads and naturalist Ian Hutton.
Tour Highlights:
- Six nights accommodation at historic Kilauea Lodge adjacent to World Heritage-listed Volcano National Park
- View the Kilauea Iki volcano (which last erupted in 1985) and walk down onto the crater floor
- Visit Volcanoes National Park with its seven ecological zones and two of the world's most continuously active volcanoes
- Wander through the markets at picturesque Hilo and enjoy the local colour and Polynesian culture
- Evening lectures with Ian Hutton and Robert Coenraads
